The Florida era

This year will mark the 18th year of the New SEC and the 18th time there will be a Conference championship game. And with the events of last Saturday Florida will represent the SEC East for the 10th time. Needless to say, more than the rest of the league combined but the only other representatives have been UGA and UT.

Here are some numbers worth considering when discussing the way Florida has dominated the conference.

10 appearances. By far the most of any team.

9 Games played so far. With one left to the play the Gators as of last year were already represented in more than half of the Championship contests. Winning at a rate of nearly 80%

8 appearances by UGA and Tennessee combined. Unfortunately, no other East teams have broken through and Tennessee and Georgia have managed to go .500 in their appearances.

7 Championships. We have won the SECCG more times than all the West winners combined (Bama 2, LSU 3, Auburn 1)

6 appearances by the second highest team. Alabama represented the West 6 times and won 2.

5 Games against Alabama. Our most regular opponent whom we hold a 3-2 record against. Alabama will have a lot of incentive to get to this game and even up that series.

4 straight. Spurrier blitzed the SEC in his early years when we represented the East in the first 5 years and won 4 straight from 93-96.

3 Zook years. Imagine where our numbers could have been if we never suffered that horrible fate. The Gator drought effectively lasted 5 years including when Jon Hokes defense let Tenn run all over us in the Swamp before Spurrier finally had enough and Meyer's first year of the recovery effort.

2 losses. Without playing our tenth game yet the Gators have only lost twice after making it to the Championship game.

1 Team at the Top. If Urban Meyer always claims to have a face of Florida football it should be said that the Face of the SEC is the Florida Gator.

The numbers say it all. Florida is the face of the modern SEC and no other team in the league has an even remote claim to the title.

Well said. We are awesome. Nice article to celebrate our awesomeness.

Would like to also add that by any objective measure this conference of ours, the SEC, is THE premiere conference in college football. Further elevating the meaning of these great accomplishments.

Go SEC
Go Gators

Another thing to consider over this same time period 7 National Champions have been from the SEC.

7 for 7. Once we get there we just dont lose.
