An Excerpt From An Email

The following is an excerpt from a friend, GatorPartyBoy.

I've had many arguments with Canes fans regarding the "Gauntlet" that they call their first four games, (which includes wins against two teams that now have 3 losses). Anyway, after hearing that the Gators' schedule is SO easy and the Canes' is SO hard, I found it interesting that the NCAA strength of schedule rankings has the Gators substantially higher than the Canes.

Gators at the Midterm

We are half way through another college football season and have finally played enough true talent to really assess what type of team the 09 Gators are.

My observations of the Gators so far:

The Good
1. We are 6-0 and all of our goals are still attainable. The schedule lines up nicely the rest of the way and should put us on a path the Bama and the de facto National Championship in Atlanta.

2. We have a championship caliber defense. Joe Haden is a beast and I think he may emerge as a top draft prospect. He is still so raw but just makes plays. It is also nice to see Omar Hunter emerging on the DLine along with our other studs. We really are deep and talented and have one of the top coordinators in the game.

3. Aaron Hernandez. Is it just me or does this kid get better every week? I swear he is going to be a beast in the league. We line him up everywhere; he hits people, runs, and catches. If I am looking for a TE this is the guy I want.

4. The running game can dominate. Outside of the Arkansas game we have run over everyone in our path. The offensive line has been able to totally impose its will on opponents controlling the line and the clock in the process. Did anyone think we would lead the country in rushing?

5. We proved against Arkansas that we can win a tight game. Our receivers really stepped up too, it might not have looked like it all game but you don’t rack up all those receiving yards with a bunch of bums.

The Not so Good
1. Addazio has a long way to go. I don’t know if he is conservative or cocky. Either way his play calling is leaving a lot to be desired. For some reason we will come out and punch people in the mouth for 60 yards, get to the red zone and try to get cute. What is that about?

2. Pass blocking. For as good as our Oline has looked when we want to run the ball they have looked pretty weak when we try to pass. Some of it is scheme and some of it is Tebow but a lot of it is just these guys not getting out of their stance and picking up their block.

3. Tebow. I know half the fan base will agree with me and the other half will crush me but Tebow has regressed. The blame is not totally on him for this, the play calling is not putting him in the best position because our passing plays are so predictable. But, when I look at Tebow after all the talk of changing his motion and getting him ready for the NFL I do not see any improvement. His motion is the same and if anything his decision making is worse. Some of those sacks are on him, I don’t know if it is a lack of trust with his receivers or his Oline but he refuses to pull the trigger unless he has a man open by 10 yards. Watching him this year I do not see an NFL QB.

4. Turnovers. We have been playing with fire all season it seems but we have to start holding onto the ball. Especially in the red zone. I have lost count of how many drives have been wasted by a turn over inside the 20.

5. Verne Lundquist. Two weeks in a row of this guy was just too much for me to take. He makes the wrong call on just about every play, I am not even sure he is watching the game he is calling.

Around the country:
1. I have watched a lot of football this season and even though we have not looked dominant there is no one else who has looked better.

2. An undefeated Texas looks like our best match up for the BCSCG. It sure beats playing 1 loss USC in a home game or having to play a rematch against Bama.

3. No one has taken the lead in the Heisman race. We might be looking at another year where a Houston QB takes home the award on ridiculous stats.

4. Sam Bradford won’t say it but I bet he regrets coming back now. If he is smart he has surgery on his shoulder and comes back again next year to prove he can play on a repaired arm.

5. Charlie Weiss has once again solidified his job with exciting close losses. At least it is enough for the Domers to leave our coach alone.

I actually sat on this list for a while so I wasn’t too knee jerk following our rough game with Arky. The more I think about that game the luckier I feel we were, but that doesn’t mean the problems we had in that game were anomalies. Still, with all of our problems and not looking like a Champion yet we are #1 in the first BCS standings and we will get to prove it on the field. Getting out of the Arky game with a win was a blessing because in Meyer’s time at UF we have needed one of those disappointments each season to get going. This is the first time I feel we got it out of our system with a win. Hopefully, this tight win, ugly win will force the offensive coaching staff to make the necessary mid-season adjustments to get us rolling again. There is no room for error now with 4 straight SEC games remaining, we need to get the balance back on offense and get Spikes healthy.

After the Arkansas wake up call I am less nervous about getting caught sleeping against MSU and Mullen.

And to end on the most positive note we are still have 6 more Saturdays to go with a good chance at a 7th.

Update on Patchan's Knee situation -- NOT GOOD

From the blogs, somebody posted the below:

"My friend was talking to Mrs.Pridemore. When TJ called her, he could not believe how bad Matt's knee looked. He said it was one of the worst knee injuries he had ever seen. TJ said he tore PCL,ACL,MCL,LCL but the good news is the peroneal nerve(I think he said) was not damage at all which would have been career ending. They're NOT expecting him back next year. That's how long it's going to take to heal after surgery.
Hope the kid stays positive and comes back strong for the 2011 season.
Go Gators"

Tebow = Good Person; You = Hellbound Scumbag

You may have seen a newspaper story about this last week (there was one in The Gainesville Sun), but the account included below was written by the grandfather of the child in question and tells the story in much more intimate and emotional detail. I know that I am a sentimental softie, but I got teary-eyed reading this. While Tim Tebow is a phenomenal athlete, he is an even better person. I know there are Gator Haters around the country who think that the “good guy” image of Tim is all hype and not really true, it is things like this that make us realize what a special young man he really is.

Brent From: Gainesville Quarterback Club Huge Gator fan gets experience of a lifetime as he meets his hero - another inspiring story about Tim Tebow Huge Gator fan gets experience of a lifetime as he meets his hero - another inspiring story about Tim Tebow Submitted by admin on Sat, 2009-09-12 12:18.

This article was written for the Naples , Florida Daily News' Community section by Bud Hornbeck - Boomer's grandfather, It isn’t everyday that a 7-year-old boy with cerebral palsy has the opportunity to meet his real life hero.

Fortunately for my grandson Boomer, he had the opportunity to meet University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer at the Winged Foot Scholarship Foundation annual banquet last May where Meyer was the keynote speaker.

In March, Boomer had undergone extensive surgery on his legs which required him to be in a full-length cast (which they applied in orange and blue). Boomer’s goal was to be able to get out of his wheelchair and walk up to shake Meyer’s hand when they met at Winged Foot. Boomer did not want to be in his wheelchair when he met his favorite coach.

I had explained all of this to Meyer prior to the event but I’m not sure he was emotionally prepared to watch Boomer struggle to get out of his chair and painfully take the two or three steps necessary to approach him. Meyer got down on one knee in order to meet and speak to Boomer and you could tell immediately he was moved by what he had just witnessed.

While speaking to Boomer, Meyer asked him if he would like to come up to Gainesville to meet his favorite player, Tim Tebow, take a tour of the athletic facilities and then attend the football game the following day. Of course, Boomer was thrilled with the invitation as was the rest of his family, especially his mother who attended UF and is a huge Gator fan.

Plans were made for Boomer and family to travel to Gainesville for the season opener against Charleston Southern on Saturday, Sept. 5. Meyer’s assistant, Nancy Scarborough, made all of the arrangements and we met her at the stadium at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Scarborough explained that Tebow would be in the coach’s office at 11:15 in order to meet Boomer, have some pictures taken and sign a few autographs before having to leave by 11:30 for media commitments.

During those 15 minutes, Tebow treated Boomer like he was his best friend. The attention and kindness he showed to Boomer was priceless and the experience that was created was something that Boomer will never forget.

Tebow had to leave, but Meyer and Scarborough continued to show us around the office area.

At one point, we went into Meyer’s office to take in all of the memorabilia on display. The coach was at his desk when he picked up a picture of him and Tebow hugging after the national championship game and proceeded to take it out of the frame and autograph it.

Suddenly, Tebow reappeared and also signed the picture before presenting it to Boomer as a memento of his trip. What happened next astounded all of us, with the exception of Meyer, when Tebow took control of Boomer’s wheelchair and proceeded to give us a guided tour of the entire stadium himself.

Over the next one and a half hours, we visited the workout facilities, training room, locker room and the football stadium, all with Tebow pushing Boomer and leading the way.

We returned to the coach’s office to say goodbye to Meyer. As we were talking, Tebow turned to Boomer and said, “How would you like to come on the field with me tomorrow for the pre game warm-up?” Meyer added, “And how about after the game you join us in the locker room to be a part of the post-game activities?” It was no surprise that both offers were readily accepted with one of the biggest smiles you have ever seen.

Friday night, Boomer’s grandmother asked him if today was the greatest day of his life.

Boomer replied that tomorrow will be the greatest day and today will be the second best. I’ll be darned if he wasn’t right.

As promised, as the team entered the Swamp for their pre-game warm-ups, Tebow ran on the field pushing Boomer in his wheelchair. As the team lined up for stretching, Tebow wheeled Boomer up and down every row of players so that he could shake all of their hands.

Boomer stayed on the field throughout the warm-ups watching his hero prepare for the game.

Boomer was then escorted to a private box reserved for the coach’s wives and families to watch the game.
Towards the end of the fourth quarter, Boomer was taken down to the locker room where Tebow brought him in to celebrate the Florida victory along with the rest of the team. A football was passed around for every player to sign for Boomer and then he was wheeled to the center of the room where he was surrounded by the entire team for their post-game prayer.

We will remember this experience for the rest of our lives and we will all be forever Gator fans for what we were so fortunate to have been a part of. We are so grateful to Meyer and Scarborough for all they did to make these two days the most special days in Boomer’s life, but we will never forget everything that Tebow did for Boomer.

Tebow did not need to take one and a half hours out of his day to spend with a 7-year-old boy who he had just met. Tebow did not need to invite this same boy to join him on the field for the pre-game warm-up or bring him into the locker room.

Tebow did these things out of the goodness of his heart so that our grandson would have the experience of his life.

Meyer said, “It was just Tim being Tim,” and believe me, that is exactly what it was.

Tebow wasn’t looking for recognition or a pat on the back for himself.

All Tebow wanted was to give a gift to a young boy who has struggled through many physical hardships and who has endured more than his share of pain.

Many Florida fans refer to Tebow as “Superman.” I used to snicker when I heard this. Not anymore.

Pining For Percy.

You probably did not see this because the highlight of the game was Farve's last-second touchdown pass to someone who is not Percy Harvin. Watch Percy hit another gear once he gets to around midfield. Kid's wicked fast. Stupid fast.

I miss this guy more so than I miss certain relatives, dead and alive. Could you imagine if we still had this kid? We'd be kicking so many teams' asses that we'd be haled into the Hague and tried for crimes against humanity. Le sigh. This Debose kid better be the real fucking deal, because we're hurting at the Percy position and other teams know it. Frankly, replacing the irreplaceable Harvin within a year or two is wishful thinking. But thankfully, we have General Spikes and his Merry Murderers around to make sure that our offense's meager point output is enough to carry the (Satur)day.

Go Learn To Move On
Go Gators.

LA ESQUINA

Welcome back my faithful brethren. Congratulations to us all for a huge win at LSU last week. And the best part is that we’re only a day and a half away from the next game. You gotta love college football season. Frankly, I don’t even remember what I used to do on Saturdays in the off-season. Lets just get to the nitty gritty…

As you all know, last Saturday we went into Les Miles’s backyard, walked into his house, and made a big cheese sandwich in his kitchen. Put the fact that we were the better team with the better players and better coach aside for a second, the truth is that funny things happen in those kinds of environments and we should all be thrilled to get out of there with a big W. Especially in death valley, that place was thundering.

As predicted, the defense was incredible. LSU only had 1 third down conversion the entire game, only 4 yards in the 3rd quarter and 44 yards of offense total in the second half (mostly when we were playing prevent D in garbage time). Our d-line was hounding Jefferson and our corners just straight smothered their receivers. To be specific, Jermaine Cunningham was a blur coming off the edge…one play in particular in which he beat Ciron Black (one of the best tackles in college football) around the corner probably put him in the first day of the draft. Dunlap would have had bigger numbers also but he was held the whole game and they weren’t calling it (watch the tape). And of Course, Sir Brandon Spikes was ubiquitous…all over the field. I really believe he is going to be a staple in the pro-bowl for years to come…what a beast! He reminds me a lot of Lamar Woodley who plays for the Steelers. He would be perfect for a 3-4 scheme in the pros. But forget the No Fun League…let’s talk about our boys and specifically, our corners.

Joe Haden (Mighty Mouse) and Janoris Jenkins (Jack Rabbit) are the best corner tandem in college football. That’s just a fact. Lafell and Tolliver were completely shut down the whole game. They barely threw at Jack Rabbit’s side and every time they did he made the play. Same for Joe who also had a pick. It’s as if they were a step ahead of every LSU play…. incredible to think about how far we’ve come in that position since the Michigan bowl game in 2007 when it looked like Chad Henne was throwing against air. Overall, a dominant performance by the entire secondary. I “think” we have the best defense in the country (Alabama might have something to say about that) but I KNOW we have the best secondary in the country. One other observation here, did anybody else notice that Will Hill started over Major Wright alongside Ahmad Black…discuss amongst yourselves, I am going to sit this one out for now.

La Esquina really hopes that you took my advice and bet a 1000 dollars on the gators last week (I know a few of you did). The only thing better than winning that game was being handsomely compensated for your team’s awesomeness. That’s the first and last time for the season though. I am not tempting the football gods anymore. Although for those of you lucky enough to witness it, there was a late night post-game incident whereby yours truly may have possibly broken, but at the very least bruised, multiple ribs. I guess the mixture of rum and cokes 6 hours before kick-off, a huge gator victory in Death Valley and winning copious amounts of money is a recipe for over elation and believing that one has secret ghetto ninja powers. Lets just say you had to be there to see this epic flop. At least now I have a valid excuse for not going to the gym. It could have been worse though, a little birdie told me that one particular avid reader of La Esquina was so wasted by kickoff he missed the entire game (you know who you are). Tighten up people, it’s ok to get sh*tfaced but for god’s sake, we only get 13 or so of these magic Saturdays a year…get it together. Or at least remember to set your DVRs.

There were some negatives in this game, as always, leave it to the spoiled brats that are gator fans (myself included) to nitpick about an undefeated team ranked #1 in the country. Again, I thought the play calling was lacking creativity. It’s just kind of boring when we’re not slinging it around and when we’re punting on 4th and short. Urban was running the spread offense’s version of 3 yards and a cloud of dust with that dive play on replay the whole game. I get it. With the O-line and RBs that we have that’s all we needed to do to win the game. Controlling the ball and playing great defense is an age old adage for football success. It’s just not what we’re used to around these parts. We were spoiled with the Spurrier fun and gun and last year’s killer spread offense with Percy and Louis Murphy certainly raised the bar. The truth is that I don’t really mind too much because we are winning but there are a few things that irk me about this approach besides the fact that it’s not as exciting to watch.

1) It’s not doing anything for Timmy’s pro-prospects as a QB or for his Heisman campaign. He is putting up pedestrian numbers in an offense where he is throwing the ball only 15 times a game. But whatever, that by itself is not too disconcerting…I mean, we are talking about one of the most decorated college football players of all time as it is and he has a lengthy body of work already.

2) My real concern is, what’s going to happen when we fall behind in a game and need to throw to catch up? And that will happen, don’t kid yourselves into thinking it won’t…it always does. Even last year where we had a more potent offense we were in dog fights against Alabama and Oklahoma. Can our offense just flip the switch and all of the sudden start airing it out? My boy dark meat D-Rod has a good theory on the lack of production from the WR position this year, I got a text today that went something like this “I think Urban should only play WPL and brother Markihse in practice to let the WR’s get their confidence up. They’re probably getting smoked by shake (#5) and bake (#1).” Makes sense, they play against the best corners in practice and presumably look like dog poop hence, the coaches don’t trust them in games and game plan around them.

3) This cannot be good for recruiting. If I am a stud WR (which we need to get) and I see that Florida has a bunch of 4/5 star receivers into their 2nd and 3rd years in the program not doing crap and I notice that Florida isn’t throwing the ball much I am skeptical. The flipside is that we can spin it by saying that when Tebow leaves we will open it up more with Brantley but still, it’s an uphill battle. At the beginning of the season I was down on David Nelson and Deonte Thompson and company but the reality is, they aren’t given a chance to make plays. They can’t catch balls that aren’t thrown to them. I just hope this conservative style doesn’t come back to bite us in the ass.

**RECRUITING TANGENT** Word on the street is that with the Bobby Bowden fiasco and FSU imploding we are now in line to pick off some of the criminoles’ top recruits (e.g. Lamarcus Joyner, Christian Jones etc.). Also, I want you all to add an extra prayer this Sunday for our recruiting efforts (those of you of course who still believe in that kind of thing anyway). Keep an eye on the following recruits: Ronald Powell, Chris Dunkley, Ivan McCartney, Shariff Floyd, Lamarcus Joyner, Jordan Hicks and Jeff Luc. If we get 4 out of these 7 guys next year and can keep the guys we have we should win the mythical recruiting national championship for the 3rd time in the Urban Meyer era and gator nation will be in good shape for years to come. On a side-note, does anybody think it’s weird that I am obsessed with 17 and 18 year old high school boys who play football? I would appreciate your feedback on this, I think it’s quite normal but then again…I may be clinically insane about my college football at this point.

One last thing about the LSU game, there’s a developing trend that is very worrisome. Our red zone offense is not getting the job done. This has historically been a team strength but this year we are walking away with field goals or even worst, no points at all after long drives. They need to fix that or it’s going to cost us a game. That just didn’t happen last year. First and goal last year was an automatic 7, this year not so much. God bless our defense because our O is taking their sweet time to get cranking this year.

MOVING ON TO THE ARKANSAS GAME…

This ain’t going to be no walk in the park. I predict a fairly high scoring affair for UF standards. Arkansas has some serious firepower with their tall 6’7 stud QB Ryan Mallet, the former Michigan transfer. They lead the SEC in passing offense and have hit a ton of big plays this year. I am concerned about this but on the other hand, as stated earlier our secondary is the strength of our team. This means that there should be plenty of opportunities for the boys in the deep back to make some BIG plays (whether it be picks or Major Wright style hits on receivers coming across the middle). I think Arkansas scores more than anybody else has on us . Although, I think we will score a ton too. Their defense is soft and sweet so we should be able to do what we want with them…which is why this is the perfect time to start working on that passing game!

This has all the makings of a trap game by all accounts…coming off a big win against LSU one would expect us to overlook a 3-2 team that has been somewhat inconsistent. But we won’t. And you know why? Because we have the built-in insurance policy that is Tim Tebow. The human safety net -- this is what separates us from the USC’s of the world who are good for one or two fluky losses a year even though their talent level is head and shoulders above that of their opponents. The whole team can be groggy, down, unmotivated, having a bad day…but you know there’s no way Timmy lets us lose a game like this. This is what he brings to the table above all else, the ability to wake up the team and utterly WILL us to victory when other similarly talented teams might flounder.

Can’t be stopped, won’t be stopped, Gators 38-20.

P.S. Be on the look-out for funky uniforms this week. It’s homecoming and my “sources” tell me that we’re going to be using different unis (not sure if it’s a throwback slant with funky helmets or just some weird color coding but something’s up).

Gameday Antics

Soooo a large crew of the NYC Gotham Gators made the trip down to Death Valley.

After a couple of durty durty nights in the Big Easy they made their way to Baton Rouge with a sinister plan.....to annoy the fuck out of our dear friend Shi Chen...with the help of the Gameday crew.....They gathered the neccesary materials and went to work.

You may have seen the sign...

Real life accounts:

"The amount of missed calls that Shi Chen had in his call log on Sat. was amazing. He probably still cannot access his email"

"About 250 calls on Sat. alone. His call log was all red and his voicemail crashed by Sat. afternoon. "

FSU Athletes are dumb

File this in the "Man lands on the Moon" files.

The NYT has an article out on the academic scandal at FSU and the scapegoat (aka tutor) tells us what us Gators already knew. At FSU they just cant read.

Brenda Monk, a learning specialist hired to work with athletes who had learning and physical disabilities, was accused of improperly helping students type, edit and write their papers. Monk, who testified that some of those athletes had a second-grade reading level, was accused of committing academic fraud. In one case, she was said to have let students use a study guide that had answers to exam questions for an online music course.

Maybe they should be attending here instead:

LSU got gagged

Won $1K on the Gators taking them -7 still pissed A. Hern let that ball touch the ground. Not the best pass tho.

At least we know we have the 5th best defense...in the NFL..
